Ocelot Fine Cacao

Package Design + Branding + Motion

Ocelot Fine Cacao was a fictional chocolate brand I created to showcase some of my motion skills for a school project. I quickly came up with the name and concept as a way to complement the multi-layered, rainforest homepage I designed based on the tropics of Brazil.

But the more I looked at this project, the more I was inspired by its potential. I started looking into the history of Brazilian chocolate, and decided that I wanted to create product packaging and a new logo for Ocelot.

My goal was to create a ‘bean-to-bar’ chocolate brand that illustrated the beauty of the new, sustainable ways that cacao farming is being used to restore and preserve the Brazilian rainforests, and the rarity of the nature found on the forest floor.

Concept

When designing the logo, I wanted to incorporate a few concepts: the shape of the cacao bean, the face (specifically the eyes) of the ocelot, and its spots. As well, I tried to include a vague leaf-life or umbrella-like shape to depict the agroforestry that’s being used to farm these cacao beans in the middle of natural forests.

PROCESS

Once I had the logo figured out, I used images of native plants of Brazil to help inform the patterns on each flavour of chocolate. I digitally painted each pattern, using bright, tropical colours and experimenting with different types of markmaking to create 3 distinct accents for the package design.
